Manulife Bank’s Insured Retirement Program Line of Credit If you hold a Manulife permanent insurance policy, you may be able to access the cash value in a tax advantaged way.

Many affluent Canadians use a permanent life insurance policy to accumulate retirement savings beyond what is allowed within registered plans. While contributions are allowed to grow tax-free as long as they remain in the policy, if the insured chooses to withdraw some or all of the cash value of the plan, they may face a significant tax bill. An alternative is the Insured Retirement Program that provides the option for you to use your life insurance policy as collateral security for a line of credit. The Insured Retirement Program (IRP) Line of Credit provides tax-free access to cash for Manulife insurance policy-holders.

If you have a Manulife permanent life insurance policy (such as InnoVision, Security UniversalLife, Performax, Performax Gold, UL 100 or an eligible Dominion Life or NAL policy), you may be eligible for an IRP Line of Credit. Discuss setting up an IRP Letter of Intent with your financial advisor.

Features
  • There are no application fees1 or maintenance fees for a personal IRP Line of Credit.
  • An IRP Line of Credit is available to both personal and corporate clients.
  • You can access your IRP Line of Credit by cheque, ABM withdrawal, direct payment purchase, bill payments and Internet and phone transfers2.
  • Interest rate for an IRP Line of Credit is floating prime plus one percent.
  • Loan amounts:
    • Canadian residents: Up to 75 percent of the current cash surrender value of the assigned life insurance policy.
    • Other: Up to 50 percent of the current cash surrender value of the assigned Manulife life insurance policy.
  • At death of the insured, the policy proceeds (less the loan and interest repayment) pass on tax-free to the named beneficiary.
  • Interest on the line of credit can be capitalized back into the loan, so you don’t need to make monthly payments.
Is it right for you?
One of the keys to financial security is the ability to borrow money quickly and cost-effectively when you need it. The best time to prepare for borrowing money is before the need arises. An IRP Line of Credit can provide you with access to tax-free cash when you need it.
