Protect Yourself From Credit Card and Debit Card Fraud

Even though Canadians use credit cards and the Interac Direct Payment Service (debit) billions of times per year with virtually no problems, there’s no denying that credit card and debit card fraud exists. Fraud occurs when a person uses your card or card information to make a purchase or apply for credit without your knowledge or consent. Manulife Bank wants to help you protect yourself from becoming one of the few victims.

When you open a Manulife Bank deposit account, remember to keep your Personal Identification Number (PIN) secret. And, if your Access card is lost or stolen or if you believe someone else knows your PIN, you need to notify us immediately anytime at 1-877-765-2265.

Shoulder surfing to get your PIN
While there have been some cases of debit card fraud involving fake terminals that were not connected to the Interac network and did not process transactions, most debit card fraud occurs when criminals obtain a person’s PIN through “shoulder surfing” with a hidden camera or by convincing the cardholder to disclose their PIN. So, when you are using a bank card at an ABM or point of sale (debit), shield or hide the keypad as you enter your PIN.
