Some safety tips
Review our list of basic PIN safety tips to learn how you can reduce your risk of bank card fraud.

Fraud is rare but smart is safe
Debit card fraud incidents are rare when compared to the volume of transactions. In 2002, Canadians used the Interac Direct Payment Service (debit) nearly 2.5 billion times with virtually no problems. However, the popularity of debit cards has made them a target for criminals.

While there have been some cases involving fake terminals that were not connected to the Interac network which did not process transactions, most debit card fraud occurs when criminals obtain a person's PIN through "shoulder surfing" with a hidden camera or by convincing the cardholder to disclose their PIN. So, when you're using your card at an ABM or point of sale (debit), shield or hide the keypad as you enter your PIN.

What we're doing about it
Manulife Bank employs a fraud specialist to review daily transactions and is trained to recognize account activity anomalies based on known fraud techniques. This individual is also the Bank's liaison with law enforcement and other bank fraud detectives to help catch and prosecute individuals and "fraud rings" whenever possible.

2Note: When using your card outside Canada, a convenience fee may be charged when using THE EXCHANGE ABMs, or when making a debit transaction at a vendor displaying the ACCEL logo.
